Many Christians are looking for an increase in signs and wonders as part of the coming revival. However, signs and wonders on their own will not change the world. The Jews still crucified Jesus, despite his many miracles.
In the western world, there is a risk that the church will nullify the effectiveness of signs and wonders. Our culture is dominated by consumerism and hedonism. In a church influenced by these values, the Holy Spirit may be seen as one more blessing to add to the many other pleasures of life in our world.
There is a risk that signs and wonders will just be an add-on to make our lives better. However, the Holy Spirit will not share our lives with other idols. We need to be careful about our motivation for seeking signs and wonders. If we want them for our pleasure or to add to our status or to make our church look good we have missed the point. Our motivation must be compassion for the world and desire to see God.
