The reason that the Berlin Wall had to collapse was that the Beast of Revelation will be based on a federation of European nations. While Europe was divided into East and West this could not take place. God allowed the empire of the Soviet Union to collapse so that Europe could move back together. 

Some of the Eastern European nations are already applying to become part of the EEC and NATO.  However, this may not bring the peace and prosperity that they expect.

It flares up and burns his hand. 

The people of Eastern Europe have risen up looking for freedom, but they will end up in even worse bondage.

These events do not mean the end of Russia. It will continue to be a powerful actor on world stage.  The seeds of future struggles are already being sown in conflict with Islamic independence movements on the southern borders of Russia.
